Wrocław - European Capital of Culture
(c) Karolina Jaklewicz

Dear Art Lovers,
Today I warmly invite you to Wrocław!
Wrocław – the capital of Lower Silesia (Dolny Śląsk) – is a young, dynamic, colorful city full of history, a university town where art plays a central role.
The city owes its cultural richness to three nations – Polish, Jewish, and German – but it is truly a meeting place for the whole world! Recently, I met a firefighter from New York and some Irish visitors enjoying Tyskie beer at a pub in the Market Square. Numerous restaurants, clubs, and cafés around the Ring in Wrocław offer wonderful opportunities to celebrate and admire the beautiful views of the Old Town buildings.
Wrocław is both New York and Venice among Polish cities, with more than 130 bridges and many tourist and cultural attractions – including Wrocław University, the Old Town, Cathedral Island, the famous Opera, and the Quarter of Four Religions. Modern landmarks include the National Music Centre, the Music Theatre “Capitol,” the modern airport, and the Sky Tower – the tallest office and residential building in Poland.
Currently, the people of Wrocław are completing the Henryk Tomaszewski Theatre Museum. I fondly remember the unforgettable performances of the Wrocław Mime Theatre by Tomaszewski, such as Hamlet – Irony and Sorrow, The Knight of King Arthur, as well as current productions like Monkeys, Galapagos, Paper Hunters, and Stazione Termini, all of which are wonderful! Microkosmos was awarded at the International Mime Festival in Norway and successfully presented at the Gavrosh Festival in Moscow. Hydrokosmos is also a delightful experience for the whole family. Director Zbigniew Szymczyk and his ensemble have prepared special events for the theatre’s 60th anniversary.
Have fun searching for one of the 300 Wrocław dwarfs, buying flowers at the Salt Square all year round, and enjoying traditional Polish cuisine in the basement of the Town Hall at the oldest restaurant in Europe – Świdnicka Keller. Sushi bars are also not missing in Wrocław.
The city offers numerous parks and colorful waterfalls, for example at the Centennial Hall Café, accompanied by the music of Mozart or Chopin – gifts of peace and romance for visitors.
For music lovers, Wrocław is a must! The International Festival Wratislavia Cantans and the world-renowned Jazz on the Odra Festival, which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2014, attract visitors from all over the world. Fans of Jimi Hendrix should not miss the 13th Guitar Guinness World Record on May 1st!
Wrocław is a fantastic city for both young and old. The famous senior citizens’ hat parade, proudly listed in the Guinness Book of Records, is a highlight not to be missed.
For those who cannot visit Wrocław this special year, I recommend the current exhibition at the Kunstmuseum Bochum – Wild West: The History of the Avant-Garde in Wrocław.
Planning a trip to Paris?
I warmly invite you to Wrocław!
Yours, Mariola Heinrich
