Polish Dance Theatre Poznan

(c) Karolina Jaklewicz

"Dance arises from the spirits of music and movement;
it forms an idea pointing a harsh stream towards the audience"
Conrad Drzewiecki (1926 – 2007)
The Polish Dance Theatre – Poznań Ballet was founded in 1973, with its leadership entrusted to the outstanding dancer and choreographer Conrad Drzewiecki.
Since 1988, Ewa Wycichowska has served as the manager and artistic director of the Polish Dance Theatre. Prof. Ewa Wycichowska was for many years the prima ballerina at the Teatr Wielki in Łódź, and is now a professor of musical arts at the Music University in Warsaw, as well as a choreographer and educator. She has worked with dance groups from America, Italy, and Germany and has served multiple times as a juror for Polish and international ballet competitions.
The concept of the Polish Dance Theatre, shaped by the personalities of its leadership, has evolved from performances inspired by the classical ballet genre to modern dance theatre. This contemporary form is characterized by crossing stylistic, technical, and genre boundaries, breaking free from traditional means of expression, embracing interdisciplinarity, and seeking new theatrical spaces. Its creative process is also based on improvisation and ultimately radiates a harmony between the spiritual and the physical elements.
Today, the original vision of an author-driven theatre is realized by outstanding artists from all over the world.
The Polish Dance Theatre – Poznań serves as a unique forum for choreography, where renowned masters such as Birgit Cullberg and Mats Ek have a voice, while also offering opportunities for interaction and dialogue with the audience for representatives of the younger, dynamic generation. This includes winners of international choreography competitions, such as Yosi Berg from Israel and Virpi Pahkinen from Sweden, as well as dancers from the Polish Dance Theatre itself, who participate in the “Atelier” group, an internal scene of the PTT for debuts and experimentation.
In its 40-year history, the Polish Dance Theatre has premiered over 200 works, performed on five continents, and received numerous prestigious awards, including FRINGE FIRSTS at the Edinburgh Festivals.
In 2013, the theatre celebrated its 40th anniversary. The premiere created for this occasion was CZTERDZEISCI/VIERZIG. Of course, every year has brought other exceptional premieres.

"I am like a gardener who plants fruit trees in his own garden.
When the fruit is ripe you eat it or share it with others but the trees themselves remain intact. The Poznan Theater is a place of my work, it is my integrity; here everything takes the shape, here I have focused my passions, ideas and concepts. Here I am not distracted and in an artistic sense I do not depend on anybody or anything. In this theater I express myself; everything I do here is mine, it is me."
Conrad Drzewiecki (1926 – 2007)
