Credo

"Painting is my primary tool for describing the world; it serves to glorify it or sometimes negate it. At the same time, my practice consists of a recording of emotions and observations, often unconscious, expressive, and highly intuitive. They oscillate around a person, his or her dependence on others, mutual influences, constraints, or manipulations. I am interested in life, energy, the body, and all biological processes. In a gradual process of their transformation, body images are deformed and deconstructed so that they can be reassembled. I strive for formal simplification, reducing superfluous things to achieve greater intensity and credibility in my message. Brushes against abstract organic forms. In art, I value freedom above all else—my own and that of the recipient. I avoid over-intellectualization; I do not puncture my art with gibberish of socially or politically correct information. I also leave the viewer the Freedom of interpretation. I don't try to be literal; I often leave most things unanswered by choosing a suggestive title—still enigmatic, but slightly directing the viewer toward my train of thought. I use photographic material in my work. These are usually photos found on the internet or in the press, or stills from films. The press itself alone provides an unlimited arsenal of materials and ideas for collages on paper, which I use as sketches for my oil paintings. What also helps me in the creative process is the omnipresent chaos and crowd that surrounds me. The subcutaneous pulse of the metropolis, which has a life of its own, and at the same time the anonymity and alienation that accompany city life, are my impulses for artistic expression.

Laudatio

In the paintings of Agata Czeremuszkin-Chrut, I see figures that resemble a tangled bundle. Spontaneously, this brings to mind the exploration of the earliest artistic expressions of young children, which begin with the primal tangle and the primal cross. In Agata Czeremuszkin-Chrut’s work, however, it is more appropriate to describe them as bundles of energy, composed of wild brushstrokes applied to the canvas like whip lashes. At the same time, this painting also possesses sensitive, seismographic qualities. Occasionally, fluid paint runs down in thin rivulets, emphasizing expressiveness and spontaneity. To the emotionality of color is added the expression of gesture.

Amid this tangle of color traces—which do not cover the entire canvas but are usually concentrated in a central area—human body forms suddenly emerge: bent legs and arms, roughly sketched, and even heads. Other shapes also appear, geometric planes resembling a stage, on which this furious dance—or should I say struggle, confrontation, or wild erotic scuffle—takes place. This stage, confirmed by the titles of the paintings, is everything found in and around the bed: pillows, blankets, sheets. A play, then, of suggested exposure and gestural concealment, artistically balanced, simultaneously provocatively open and discreet.

The artist writes in a statement, reflecting what seems to be her experience of city life (quote):
"What helps me in the creative process is the ubiquitous chaos and the crowd that surrounds me. The hypodermic pulse of the metropolis with its own life, and at the same time the anonymity and alienation that accompany urban life, are my impulses for artistic expression." (end quote)

She also cites Francis Bacon in very stark terms. Bacon wishes (quote):
"His pictures should look like traces of human presence and memories of past events, like a snail leaving its slime behind." (end quote)
